Guidelines, Hilldale Award in the Physical Sciences

Guidelines:

The Physical Sciences Divisional Committee regards the Hilldale Award in the Physical Sciences as a career award recognizing outstanding all-around contributions to the University in research, teaching, and university service. It has not been awarded on the basis of research alone, nor for research with only minimal teaching and service, as there are prestigious national awards in most fields for outstanding research. In particularly strong cases based on research and teaching, the service aspect of the Award has been given lesser weight. In keeping with the career aspect of the Award, preference has been given to nominees near the end of their university careers in choosing among equally strong candidates.

The Hilldale Award winner is asked to speak at the annual Physical Sciences banquet on a subject of his or her choice related that person's career activities.

The past winners of the Hilldale Award in the Physical Sciences are:

1986-87      William F. Fry, Physics
1987-88      Henry A. Lardy, Biochemistry
1088-89      R. Byron Bird, Chemical Engineering
1989-90      Howard Zimmerman, Chemistry
1990-91      Walter Rudin, Mathematics
1991-92      Edwin N. Lightfoot, Chemical Engineering
1992-93      Hector F. DeLuca, Biochemistry
1993-94      Lawrence F. Dahl, Chemistry
1994-95      Willy Haeberli, Physics

Nominations:

The material submitted in nomination of a faculty member for a Hilldale award should include a curriculum vitae and a letter from the department or departments proposing the nomination. The letter should show clearly why the nomination is appropriate, with brief descriptions of the candidate's major accomplishments in research, teaching, and service, and a discussion of their overall impact. It is important that all areas be covered, and that they described in the context of the university.

Nominations that are not successful initially will be remain active for three more years. Departments may wish to update the letters on nomination, or supply additional material, but that is not required.
