EXAM INFORMATION

PHYSICS 715, STATISTICAL MECHANICS

General comments:
The exams are designed to test your comprehension of the material covered in lecture, the assigned reading, and the homework problems. They give you a chance (which you may not want!) to demonstrate that you understand the material and can apply it at the appropriate level.

The exam questions typically involve some mixture of calculation -- or the setting up of calculations -- and explanation or description of methods of solution and the associated physical phenomena. The descriptive/explanatory parts can be somewhat open ended. I want to find out what you know and can explain cogently, not what you don't know.

Exam dates:
The three exams will all be hour exams, and will count equally (25 points each) in the final grade for the course. The first two exams will probably be on Wednesday, February 22 and Wednesday, April 12 during the regular class period. The third exam will be during the final exam period on Wednesday, May 8, at 12:25 pm in a room to be announced. Plan ahead and don't end up out of town those days!

Sample exams :
The exams from 1996 should give you an idea of the material covered and the level. The material is being covered in roughly the same order this year as in 1996.
