LECTURE 5
     goals and outline

lecture title

    Three Great Principles: Galileo
    (plus Lec 4, 3. Equations....deferred to Lec 5)

lecture goals

  • By "understand" in the following, I mean be able to give an example which illustrates the principle, and explain how it illustrates it.
  • Understand Galileo's Principle of Inertia, inertial (constant-velocity) motion is "natural" and persists.
  • Understand Galileo's Principle of Superposition: vertical and horizontal motions take place independently of each other.
  • Understand Galileo's Principle of Relativity: the laws of physics have the same form for two observers with inertial relative motion.
  • Learn to use the simplest form of the translation rules between observers with inertial relative motion, namely the "hard catch" and "soft catch" rules.

outline of lecture

    1. Inertia

    2. Superposition

    3. Relativity

quote

Our method proceeds with reasoning by steps from one conclusion to another while His (God's) is one of simple intuition.

-- Galileo Galilei, Salviati in Dialogue?
